This is a pretty cool article. I learned something new after reading it. Look for the section about YKK, very cool.

I can relate to the material recycling. When I was 17, my first full time job was stone setting in the jewelry industry. Once a year, everyone would meticulously clean their work bench, floor, surroundings. the sweepings were collected, and sorted, and rendered down. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of precious metals each year.

Does anyone actually leave their leather luggage tag attached to their bag when checking? I’m flying tomorrow and am considering it, just wanted to know if anyone has had one fall off or not.
Isn’t that the exact purpose of a luggage tag???

I always have a tag attached and one in the bag.

Yes. I tend to place it where it’s less likely to snag on stuff - eg on a large duffle I put it on the D ring on the handles so it’s closer to the body of the bag.
As others have suggested, a biz card or tag inside and visible is a good idea.
Lastly, depending how long / where you are going, perhaps just put a cell number and email rather than your physical address. No point advertising an empty property.

Thanks @speedy611 this is what I was looking for. @Stratkat I know that’s the purpose of a luggage tag, but the leather tag is heavy and held by a thin leather strap. It’s probably tougher than I imagine. I though it might be prudent to ask if anyone has lost one while flying since $70 isn’t exactly a cheap tag.

My thought exactly. It’s like flying with a C-Note as a luggage tag. Easy to have stolen and painful to have lost.

Unrelated, but I had this nice insect repellent treated bandanna I ordered specifically for a kayak camping trip. It literally slipped right off my neck unbeknownst to me, and into the Delaware River. I image a luggage tag is subject to the same fate.

It’s not very Filson or aesthetic but you could always supplement the tag with a big zip tie. That’d reduce tear off significantly, as well as casual theft, given that most people in airports can’t carry a cutting device.

I don’t check my luggage, nor do I have a Filson tag (Saddleback), if I was that worried about it coming off, or stolen, I’d punch a hole and peen a brass rivet.

As ready as one can be for the tornado season.
