Wanted to buy a pair of AE's from amazon.com but apparently there is a $70USD import fee which I find ridiculous. Is there any way around this?

You could find a proxy in the US to buy them and ship them to you (for a fee).

The main reason for duties from amazon.com is that they charge you a pre-emptive fee for duties, fees and taxes that the shipper (most likely UPS) may charge.

If you were to buy off of eBay, YMMV. It all depends on how the seller ships and if your lucky when it crosses the border (no fees, taxes, or duties+taxes).

I thought US made goods were duty free to Canada due to NAFTA.
You're still responsible for taxes and fees though.

The way amazon.com breaks it down seems to point that they charge duties, since taxes on the shoes should be very minimal. Either that, or they charge an exorbitant amount for brokerage/handling fees.

You don't say what the charge is so we can only guess.

UPS ground and to a lesser extent FedEx ground charge criminal brokerage fees.

But you use UPS air or FedEx next day [or whatever they call it] you don't pay brokerage etc. You just pay PST/GST. You'll pay a little more for shipping but save on everything else and the package will show up quicker.
