1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Indeed, I think Ms. Callas is the best voice of the modern era. Plenty of great names thrown out in this thread, but Callas is the best. Not even the the outmoded recording equipment of her day can hide it.

Whitney Houston --- She has become a joke thanks to her never-ending tabloid presence, and her voice has been shot thanks to drug abuse. BUT, for the first 15 years of this woman's career, she was literally as good as anyone that had ever come before her. Whitney's voice was incomparable live. Strength, Clarity, Soul, Control - all there, as well as a mesmorizing stage presence. I don't care what anyone says, there is not a contemporary singer alive today that had as much control of their voice as Whitney did. Nobody who could transition from chest to head voice as smoothly and certainly noone with the vocal POWER and enough interpretive skills to ballance that strength with more subtle singing. Whitney's recorded music never did her voice justice. But, if you listen to her live recordings, you'll hear the sheer brilliance of a legendary vocalist.
Hear hear for all the Whitney fans... Plus I have to concur with the mentions of Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin... Also, Jordin Sparks, the newest American Idol, has tremendous range and the talent to make it into this category... Finally, though I may have missed it, I don't see where anyone has mentioned Diana Ross. Amazing vocals and body of work.

Fiona Apple (not much about the voice as it is about her music writing, and I don't mean lyrics, I mean, the musical notes she places on words)
    Nina Simone

Okay, this thread is huge. But am I the first on Leona Naess?

The vocal range that Callas had in her possession was nothing short of miraculous. The woman sounded like a baritone in her low register, but in the next bar, she would hit high E's and F's in full voice. It's simply unbelievable.

I am currently obsessed with Cat Power (Chan Marshall). But it's probably already been posted.

Rosie Thomas .... she sang backup for Sufjan Stephens for a bit.
And I will admit to liking A Fine Frenzy for the past 3 or 4 months.

Its shame that she only did a snippet of "How can I tell you" for that commercial.
