    Bernadette Peters.

My wife and I saw her the day after we were married. She was amazing. As a side note she also rudely never RSVP-ed to our wedding invite and failed to sing us a song, but that's neither here nor there. She did a really hot version of Fever.

Wow whoopee mentioned my top 3, which is Tori Amos, Beth Gibbons and Jenny Lewis. I also agree with Diana Krall, who I did not think of initially.

    I also like:

    Imogen Heap
    Suzanne Vega
Sarah Mclachlan - I think she's underrated; simple and comforting voice.
    Hope Sandoval

+ 1 to Bjork, Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann.

    Also +1 to Merzbow.

I'm going to add Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, Liz Phair and Poe

Too bad they weren't a bigger success although they definitely made the rounds on commercials and movies, most notably for me was the Budweiser ad with the Clydesdales running through snow to the tune of "Wild Horses." Or on a more graphic note how the same song was used for the scene in "Fear" where Mark Wahlberg decides to give Reese Witherspoon a real "E ticket ride" on the rollercoaster. Harriet was married to the guitarist, had a baby, and the rumor is she works as a school teacher. No offense to teachers, but what a total waste.

Boia! How could I forget the fabulous fado singer, Mariza.
'Fado em mim' Live at WOMAD: just incredible. As is everything else by her.

I don't know anything official but couldn't they simply be between albums? Their last one was Static and Silence (a great album I highly recommend) and that was out in...well I guess 1997. That was a while ago. edit: This is what Wikipedia has to say: "The band is currently on a hiatus; Wheeler and Gavurin are a couple and are currently raising their two children. As of 2006 they have been linked with John Craven (of Newsround & Countryfile fame) to record a new album (Babo On The Kabo; EMI)." b

Barbara Cook has the best voice I've ever heard, male or female. Just sublime. She's the definition of a virtuoso.

    Tina Turner +infinity
    Patsy Cline
    Ella
    Enya!
    Madonna (old shit)
    Whitney (again, the older stuff)
    Joni Mitchell
    Stevie Nicks
    Emmylou Harris
    Annie Lennox.

Marianne Faithful recovered recently from breast cancer. Either the 'RIP' was presumptiuous, or a reference to her voice of a previous era, maybe...
