I saw there was a thread about a year ago on this and wanted to resurrect the topic.

I am just getting into the hobby and am wondering what everyone's favorite wine is for $25 and under. There is a wine store by my house that is way too intimidating trekking through. it is floor to ceiling filled with wine.

thanks for your input.

Changes all the time. I find several great <$25 wines every year, and buy as much as I can. But it goes fast, and once gone, stays gone. Then I have to start over.

When you find one, don't tell anyone, just buy all you can, quietly.

You can get a great Riesling at that price point. Check out some of the Malbecs coming out of South America. Aussie shiraz, lots of that around that price point.

+1 Most syrah coming out of Australia these days are of decent quality. I can't say the same for "some" local brands.

For reds, Cotes du Rhone from a good year can be a very friendly choice. I haven't recently dipped in-- still working on 99, 00, etc., but 03 04 and 05 reputed to be fantastic vintages for southern Rhone. Parallele 45 is usually about $10, and Coudelet du Beaucastel is something below $25.

Top-notch Beaujolais Village (i.e., a good producer or merchant's wine from Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent, Julienas, Fleurie, etc.) from a good year like 03 or 05 is very useful, esp in summer or large parties in winter.

For whites, Muscadet is generally underpriced, as is most good German Riesling. There are some very good Alsatian Pinots Gris and similar for less than $25. Worth experimenting there, b/c if you find a winner you will likely have it all to yourself. Nobody here really takes the trouble.

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like I have lots to learn and lots to try. I am going to wander through the big ass wine store this weekend and try to find some of the suggestions.

Keep the ideas coming.

What kind of wine do you like? Red or white? Pinot Noir? Chardonnay? Fess Parker has a wonderful Syrah for $22. Google search Fess Parker.

I know it may sound funny but when I first started drinking wine and having no knowledge of what my tastes were, I would go to the wine store about once a week and buy 2-3 different bottles of things I had never tried before. When I found one I liked I would buy several bottles to keep at home. But I still continued to try new things.

Lucien Albrecht Pinot Blanc

It's a steal at only $13. I stock up on it. It's great for not only an every day wine but for pairing with dishes and semi-formal parties. Everyone I've introduced to it loves it.

Try anything by - Joel Gott. I think some may be screw top, but all his wines are fantastic and should be about $15-20. I've found - Rosemount wines to be great as well, and they are available pretty much anywhere.

Have fun.
