This thread is meant to be a little different than the typical "Favorite places you've been to" fare that StyleForum generally serves up. The question here is: Where, when, and what have been your favorite experiences abroad? They have to replicable for other forumites - i.e. that one time you went to Tokyo and ended up sleeping with four girls at a club does not count as a favorite travel experience. Also, let's refrain from discussing excellent shopping opportunities. Lastly, let's think about experiences that were excellent because of the scenery, mood, and place, rather than because of the great friends you were with. An example could be seeing the cherry blossoms in Kyoto in the spring, scuba-diving in Costa Rica, bird and ladyboy-watching in Thailand, or getting lost in the stone-paved Medieval streets of Siena.

So, what have been your favorite travel experiences?

Spending a week in Nice, France. It was really my only bigtime travel experience (unless you count going to stoopid Canadia twice, but I don't). It was just an incredibly beautiful place to be. Early spring, before the summer crowds got there. You could see some castles, take a day trip to MonteCarlo or Italy, etc. It was just paradise. The food was amazing, the scene was amazing, everything about the entire week was perfect.

This weekend I took the train for 30 Krona (about Ă‚ÂŁ3.40) from Copenhagen central station to the airport. It took 12 minutes. THAT is what I call a nice travel experience. And Copenhagen is a wonderful city. The airport is also the best I have ever seen. My two-penorth...

Hmm, I guess I really don't have many travel experiences that fit your definitions as most of mine involve people.

However, I feel the wonderful experiences I've had can be easily replicated by others, IF, you travel and are willing to leave as much of your preconceived ideas at home. Just be incredibly open to new experiences and live for the moment. Often the people you can meet are incredible and that is what makes much of the travel worthwhile, at least for me.

Sure, it is amazing to see the mountains or the ocean or whatnot. But, what I remember the most, are the beers I shared with other climbers I met, or the family that invited me into their home and shared a meal with me, or . . .

I was going to link the "Where do you like to finish thread" as an example of why I love Munich (and Europe in general) but I guess that **** got squirreled. Damnit.

To the OP, scuba diving here in CR ain't bad at all. I'd recommend a few spots along the Pacific side since I really haven't seen anything on the Caribbean worth diving (repeatedly).

On topic, spend several days in the old part of Salzburg. Visit the Agustiner beergarden inside the church, take a tour over to the ice cave, rent a bike and ride along the river and outskirts of town, and spend some time taking in the view from the top of the castle. As quiet and "boring" as it could be for some people to live there, I don't think I'd mind one bit.

you love to finish in Germany? Weird.

As for me - there have been so many, but if I had to pick one I would go with the the first Chaly Rally, racing through the ethnic minority villages in the central highlands and the tea plantations with 20-odd of my best friends.

Locals all coming out to watch us go through with this strange mixture of curiousity and elation on their faces (quite possibly never seen white people before, let alone 20 of them on motorbikes designed for a 12 year old).

Time of my life.

Trip to the East Coast w/ my family when I was 9. Loved Kennebunk Port, marshmallow fluff, the Marine Corps marching band. Traveling through Europe w/ my brothers. When the youngest graduated from college, the middle one and I paid for the youngest and we did the one month marathon. Particularly enjoyed the Guggenheims in Bilbao and Venice. Loved walking at night in Prague, Valencia, Rome. The architecture, the lighting, the street activity... Jerusalem just felt holy. Driving in Manila was fun. You can be on the left-most lane of a heavily trafficed four lane road and still make a right turn. It's all a big game of chicken. Hiking the north rim of the Grand Canyon in winter w/ light snow everywhere was spectacular. As is the train or car through Switzerland, SE Germany, and Austria. Once borrowed a friend's car to drive from Tuebingen to Salzburg. Gorgeous. Had a great time driving across the US w/ a girlfriend after college. We alternated nights in hotels and national parks. My sis and her husband gave us a very helpful book, Eat Your Way Across America. Loved Chicago, South Dakota, and Yellowstone. A lot of my most memorable, and in some ways least fun, experiences were a pain, such as a 24 hr low budget boat ride from Zamboanga Phils to Sandakan, Malaysia, or a 16 hr bus trip from Alexandria, Egypt to the border of Israel. The bathroom was plugged at the beginning of the journey. At the end...

I had the opportunity to fly on Concorde several years ago, in which case the journey was more amazing than the destination. It's pretty damn cool to have the captain come over the PA and inform you that you are traveling at Mach 2. Not to mention the service was unparalleled, the flight crew truly loved the aircraft they were flying.

I loved Hong Kong as well, such a beautiful city.

Two months in Italy for my best friends wedding, summer of 2006. He is originally from Italy, and has lived in America for several years, however his family still has a "villa"/small estate there. Amalfi coast, beautiful weather, wonderful food, and one hell of a 17 course ..yes 17 course meal. The wedding lasted from 12 noon till 4 am...and only stopped when the Police showed up. I haven't missed a summer yet even with the horrific exchange rate this summer I still made it for 3 weeks.

In general, I love the feeling of having just sat down in the quiet car of the train and getting ready for it to pull out and head to NYC. I love NYC. I love taking the train. And I love being in the quiet car.

Specific experience: sitting on a park bench on Montjuic near the MNAC in Barcelona having a picnic lunch with my wife.

This is on my list. The train from Barcelona up the Costa Brava and on into France. Lovely.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
