What is your favorite clothing-related occurrence in a movie? Either quotes, or entire wardrobes, or what an actor wore in a particular scene, etc...

I'll start: from the movie The Game:

Nicholas van Orten loses a shoe when climbing a fire-escape ladder:
Nicholas: There goes a thousand dollars.
Christine: Your shoes cost a thousand dollars?
Nicholas: That one did.

The clothes in Once Upon a Time in America were nice, except for some of the gangster-style shirt collars.

2  that almost retail like closet in the house in the detroit suburbs in 'out of sight';
3  that scene in 'casino' where robert deniro steps out from behind his desk wearing those sheer socks;
4  the jean paul gaultier designed suit that gary oldman wears in 'the fifth element';
5  two scenes from stephen soderbergh's 'ocean's eleven':  first, the scene where they are buying the vans and the ultra firm handshake devolves into a discussion on hand moisturizer, and second, the scene where they are at the tailor getting sol his suits made and he is more interested in, it seems, the italian cloth
6  the nearly all black wardrobe worn by ryan phillippe in 'cruel intentions';
7  all of the wardrobe in francis ford coppola's 'bram stoker's dracula';
8  george clooney's kiton suits in 'intolerable cruelty';

On the Monday following the release of that movie at the entire office was sporting some type of a blue shirt and a black slacks [the escalator scene]. I urged them to line up so I can use their shirts as a Pantone color chart...

Thomas crown affair and meet joe black were exceptional for wardrobes.

Speaking of 'Love Actually', Rowan Atkinson was wearing a beautiful suit during his brief appearances. Anyone know the name of the tailor?

Oh, and I will add 'Gangster No 1' to the list. Paul Bettany was dressed superbly. I love how they show his character laying out his wardrobe so carefully.

In the Great Gatsby, when Jay is showing Daisy his closet and he mentions that a gentleman in England sends him all his shirts, and you see the shelf with multiple Turnbull and Asser boxes stacked one on top of the other. How cool is that? But then, most of the clothing in the movie was excellent, old Ralph did a pretty good job.

I always thought that Peter Sellers was impeccably dressed as Inspecteur Clouseau in the various Pink Panther movies. At least, until he sets himself on fire, falls into a pool, or manages to shred his clothes in some unfortunate accident.

1. I like Brosnan in those (James Bond) Brioni suits. Not so much the Roger Moore era.

2. Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne (you can keep the Batman suit) looked very elegant in a simple get-up of flannels, turtleneck, alligator belt with sterling silver buckle, and overcoat.

3. Cary Grant in just about anything, but I especially liked the relaxed "To Catch A Thief" style.

4. "Gattaca", for its simplicity. Jude and Ethan looked pretty sharp there, IMO.


5. And since I can't resist this anecdote, "Bull Durham". Tim Robbins plays a young pitcher, Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh, opposite the veteran catcher Crash Davis, played by Kevin Costner. When Nuke starts having some control problems with his fastball, he tries some crazy tactics (such as breathing through his eyelids) to get his form back. One idea is to wear a women's garter underneath his uniform. So, when Costner comes through the locker room (actually enjoying the whole ordeal) and sees him fiddling with the undergarment, he seems to take it all in stride. He strolls up, re-situates the garter and says, "The rose goes in front, big guy".

From Parry (Robin Williams) in The Fisher King: 'There are three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer.' Also, later on, Jack (Jeff Bridges) does some makeshift tailoring for Parry by stapling his trousers to an acceptable length. And, not from a film, but rather from an episode of NBC's Saturday Night, does anyone remember John Belushi's 'Samurai Tailor'? One of a series of skits in which his samurai has sundry jobs (tailor, stockbroker, hitman).

I've always been a fan of the scene in the most recent Bond movie, when 007 emerges from captivity in Hong Kong, and buys several Brioni suits and ties which are delivered to the hotel. It appeals to me, as it reminded me a little of my return from the war in Iraq, coming back to both civilization-- and Brioni.

Does anyone know who made the suits for the hugh grant film "2 weeks notice?" My wife liked this movie, and there were some great suits in it.

I am really fond of the style of Turkish and Tommy in SNATCH. The deep blue with white contrast collars, as well as the tan overcoats. Benicio Del Toro has some great clothes in it as well. My best guess (assuming that they did not have custom shirts for them) is that Paul Smith contributed a bit of the wardrobe.
