So i'm going to order a W.W. Chan shirt and i'm blown away by all the choices. What are your favorite patterns on http://wwchan.com? I'm having a hard time deciding.

Let's assume for the sake of argument, that I have nothing already except a blue check broadcloath from brooks brothers and a solid pink. Does it make sense to have a custom white shirt done or does it make more sense to pick a pattern that's a little more unusual.

I've got an appointment with Chan in Los Angeles next week. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm wondering, are you considering anything other than shirts? And when do you see them?

I see them in DC on Friday. I'm going to start with a shirt and ask them to take suit measurements for future reference. I've got a tailor here who is going to make me my first suit and I want to see how that goes. If I like the whole Chan experience with the shirt I may consider them for my next suit.

Aside from customer service, their execution of a shirt order won't tell you anything about how they would execute a suit order.

To answer the OP, everyone needs a white shirt. If you want something distinctive, you could choose a textured fabric. Something like a twill would test Chan's pattern-matching skills, something I always like to do with a first order.

Edit: I agree with Dan that this will tell you almost nothing about their abilities to make a suit. I would expect different people to make the suits vs. the shirts.

Of my nine Chan shirts, this is my favorite:

It's fabric number 262:
