kaputt is so good because it's like an incredible 80s album. behars vocals are also really suited towards that style, while his earlier more experimental stuff was a bit harder on the ears.

Yeah his album is pretty good.

Lovin' these guys, heard a song while a friend was playing Fifa, got their album and it is great.

I must say my top 3 this year are:

    1. Hugh Laurie - Let Them Talk

    2. Meg & Dia - Cocoon

    3. Lydia - Paint it Golden

    4. Childish Gambino - EP (Camp sounds good so far, but dunno which I like better)

    5. Lana Del Rey - EP (I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and say her unreleased album is gonna be amazing)

    6. The Weeknd - House of Balloons

For me these have been my favorites, still a month and a half left. And already next february Fun. is releasing their new album, Nate Reuss always delivers.

I saw Hugh Laurie live in SF. I think he sounds better on a cd. How would you describe the music of your selections 2 and 3?

Meg & Dia is a band two sisters that play indie-pop-rock. Comparable to Tegan and Sara maybe.

Lydia is just a fantastic indie-rock band , this is their 4th album and not as good as their others. But still one of the top for me this past year. Give their first few albums a try if you are interested,

I just sorted my I-tunes library by year and I have a total of 1 album from 2011 - Music sounds better with you by the Acid House Kings. It's pretty good (not a patch on the perfect last one though) but there must have been better out there. By the way, sorting I-tunes by year is probably a good way of checking when you became old, I have to go back to 2006 to find a decent number of albums.

Having seen the reccomendations here I've bought the Destroyer album after you-tubing it and falling for the "Sounds, Smash Hits, Melody Maker, NME, all sound like a dream to me." line. I did it wrong by ordering the cd and not downloading it or getting the vinyl didn't I?

Didn't catch this thread when it was new, but I'm glad I clicked on it. I'm digging Destroyer's Kaputt, which is a pleasant surprise since I've never really gotten into his/their earlier stuff.

It takes a while to get it. At first it seemed like Lou Reed's and Metallica's styles clashed, so I'd hear it either as Metallica songs with odd beat poetry, sprechgesang vocals or else as Lou Reed songs with oddly inappropriate metal riffing in the background. Once you stop hearing them as Metallica songs or Lou Reed songs, though, they become very compelling on their own terms. The best songs, IMO, are "The View," "Pumping Blood," and "Junior Dad." The latter is actually quite touching in an odd way. The only one I dislike is "Brandenburg Gate."
