It's actually dubstep in the truest sense of the genre, in that most modern stuff that people consider dubstep is a newer variation on a very old genre.

Well I've argued this with my friends too. And it doesn't help that I don't really know what Dubstep is - I think of Burial. Basically the Wiki page for Dubstep reads:

But I get very little of that from the album. Granted, that definition could be like you said, what modern or popular Dubstep is these days.

I just think of James Blake as part of the UK garage continuum, there's some elements of dubstep in there but it's pretty far from the textbook definition. Some people might call it 'post-dubstep' or 'uk bass' or whatever.

I'm not really sure what you even mean by this, but the James Blake album is pretty far from the original dubstep stuff coming out 10 years ago.

I find it pretty hard to articulate, as I'm far from an expert in the genre, but my friends who absolutely adore everything remotely dubstep-esque say that Blake's music is stripping dubstep down to the bare essentials.

I just listened to the new Blink 182 single, Up All Night. I just relived high school in 3 minutes. I'm going to have to get this album and rock out to it.

Bit early for this thread, no?

Anyway Kunk's post #2 is a good choice. The two door cinema club release is a great album.

I'm going to pre-emptivelly say that M83's album will be my favorite album released this year.

As for albums that have already been released, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Cass McCombs and Washed Out are all pretty great.

The new M83 song is excellent.

I am just getting into the new Washed Out and Memory Tapes albums. High hopes...

Also looking forward to the Arch/Matheos album in Sept. Prog metal legends...
