I have almost this exact setup:

For the time being, I'm using Starbucks, but to be honest getting pretty sick of it.

Maybe I'll try some Illy...every time I have it, it's delicious...

Pretty much the same equipment I use. For the money (especially during one of their sales) I don't think you can beat the Barista espresso maker. I've been using mine with great results for more than four years.

Personal choice for coffee is Miscelabar(sic?) Espresso from Pittsburgh roaster La Prima.

I got mine for $60 - employee discount plus helpful boss == mega savings.

Out of curiosity, what's the average shot time you get from it? Mine is ~14 seconds from the time I press the button, which in the store, would be considered short.

Yeah, about the same. A lot depends on how well I tamp it. More tamping pressure...more time.
Also, I think your store machine might have a few more atmospheres available.[IMG]

Let me know the next time you have a $60 Barista available![IMG]

All espresso machines that use a pump have enough pressure available to make a proper espresso. Traditional Espresso dogma stipulates a shot time of 25 to 30 seconds for proper extraction. At 14 seconds your shots will be watery and not as flavorful as they could be. You can add a couple of seconds by tamping harder but to get at least a 25 seconds shot you will need to adjust your grinder for a finer grind. [IMG]

Yeah, believe me I know that - I was trained on the original Starbuck's machine which was a real semi-automatic that had some ridiculous pressure. But the machine I have is "supposed" to be self-tamping...not really the case, AFAI can tell. So I need to go find a tamp somewhere, because using the top of a spoon isn't really working.

Maybe I need a better grinder too.

The Barista has actually been discontinued, Tony...sorry! They dropped the price to $100 and then I got a 40% floor model/employee discount. They all got snatched up within a week of the price drop.

I never saw any on sale at the Starbucks I frequent. Damn, I'd have bought a backup at that price.
