my grandad always said
"don't fake being rich or you'll end up broke"
he was never a true dandy of course
but secondly you don't need to impress the fella behind the counter
for god's sake he only works in a shop

a fashion writer who has never posted a fit pic is the very definition of * talks the talk *

Amazed that he’s had an internet presence for so long and managed to maintain his incognito.
I guess some people value their privacy.

I've met Derek on a number of occasions. He walks the walk.

I have no issue with his choice not to post photos, and I don’t doubt that he “walks the walk”. I just think it’s silly to pretend he doesn’t have money when he clearly spends a huge amount on clothes and accessories.

He wrote in a fairly recent article about a sweater retailer he really liked but said “I could never afford anything in their store” (prices from $500-$1000). I just don’t understand the point of the faux-Everyman comments.

I think it is rash to make assumptions about how any person, not just Derek, chooses to budget. In my own case, for example, what I think I can afford is incredibly elastic. $150 pair of running shoes? Yikes, I can't afford that! $1600 pair of Edward Greens? Sure, here's my Amex.

I realize perfectly well that we are all entitled to our opinions and we all make judgements about people we don't know. But it troubles me that some of the comments in this thread are getting pretty close to ad hominem.

I am only referencing things that he himself wrote that are (to me) wildly contradictory. I think Derek, the king of dredging up things that other people wrote in the past, would understand.

He also once wrote that people who make “low six figure” salaries shouldn’t buy bespoke because they don’t have enough money. So what conclusion should I draw from that about him, considering he has a large bespoke wardrobe?

dieworkwear leaving was the best thing that ever happened to this forum. He was banning people for no reason simply because he had a grudge and was made to look stupid.

This from someone who has been here for all of four months.

How would someone who has been here for four months possibly know all the contributions that Derek has made over the years? Hardly an ad hominem attack.

I didn't realize he left, since I had almost left, in part because of his almost taking over the forum.
I know how much Derek contributed by the way.
He also created problems and stifled discussion in equal amounts imo.
That being said this thread serves no purpose I would say, it is pretty pointless to write resentful things about him here.

The smartest kid in the class typically gets bullied and mocked. It's nothing new. Some people just can't help it.
