My father and grandfather wore them and I was dress in them as a child, but I never liked them. C'est la vie.

If you follow the link in the first post to my essay, it has a link to a web site with pictures of the available styles. You can order by email or fax. The Shetland-based woman who put the site together, Louise Irvine, contracts to individual knitters in their homes.

She also offers hand spun and hand knit stuff.

I've been looking for nice fair isle jumpers for a few weeks now.

I have a strange feeling I have been subliminally influenced by trend setters though, and I will be ashamed to wear what will be seen as a fashion garment. I am basing this mainly on the high prices on e-bay for fair isle patterned knits.

Is everyone going to be wearing fair isle stuff this winter or can I buy in safety?

(worth a bump for the op's link anyway)

I would only wear one if it had sleeves and was very oversized and heavy knit with very slim jeans. Worn in a traditional fit and as a vest on a younger guy would look too old fashioned.

I wrote an essay about them last month. http://asuitablewardrobe.blogspot.co...se-irvine.html

Thanks for the introduction to the brand. I am now considering a purchase of the Prince of Wales pattern myself.

Very nice. I had a brilliantly almost-psychedelic one until moths attacked. Maybe I should seek Ms. Irvine out for a replacement. My new PRL FI knit waistcoat is great but the pattern's too subdued
