I am sure that I saw, sometime in the past, a chart for how much fabric you need for shirts and suits. I am pulling the trigger on buying some fabric, and I would like to buy enough, but not a lot more than enough.

I haven't worn anything off the rack for a long, long time, but I think I am something like a 48 extra short. looking for enough fabric for double breasted jacket, 2 pair pants, and a vest.

thanks

Your best bet is to ask the tailor who will make the suits for you. Opinions diverge and some tailors like to take extra precautions with fabric requirements.

As a rule of thumb, I would say 2 meters for a jacket, 1.5 for trousers. Not sure about vests

it is best to ask your tailor. also you need to add for certain details. plaids, patch pockets, etc.

you need one yard for a vest on it's own. you only need to add 1/4-3/8 for a vest with a suit.

It depends on so much, like pattern, and stylistic choices. The bigger the pattern the more you need, patch pockets may require a bit more as well, but not much. Obviously DB needs more than SB

I always err on the too much side, and with what's leftover, I'll have a square made, or a tie, or a scarf. You don't want to get stuck with not enough.

Also, some tailors will need more than others...I'd call and ask, but go first so he (or she) can measure you.
