Having a meeting with Chan in NYC in March and interested in getting one of the following three made in a three season weight, likely around 11/12oz:

1. Grey Sharkskin Suit
2. Blue Suit with very subtle herringbone or plaid
3. Blue Blazer

Anyone had any experiences with ordering one of these from Chan and have any good books they would recommend I look at? I know the blazer is pretty broad, not really even sure what the most versatile weave would be (fresco, hopsack, worsted etc).

Any suggestions?

Chan has Holland & Sherry, Harrisons, Scabal, Zegna, Charles Clayton and a few others. Can't remember them all. For the blazer, I would go with a two-season cloth instead. Serge or flannel for winter and fresco or hopsack for summer. That way you can eventually have two jackets- one for each season. I recently had a quarter-lined "blazer" made with Scabal hopsack. 3 patch pockets and MOP buttons instead of metal.

They also have some Lesser fabrics. My latest acquisition from them was a cool-weather blazer from a 12-ounce Lesser flannel in royal blue.

They also have VBC and Loro Piana fabrics, to name a couple of others.

I recently bought a DB in 13 oz Lesser. Quite nice. I think I'll get a Scabal Barathea tux next.

How is the quality of Chan garments compared to Ralph Lauren Purple Label suits made by St. Andrews? Is Chan on par or of lower quality in construction?
Also,I hear suits start at $1200,I assume that is exclusive of fabric?

Thanks for the info, that is a good suggestion. I may start with a warmer weather blazer. Do you remember the weight of the hopsack?

I had a tux made using 12oz H&S barathea from Chan and would recommend it, great stuff.

I think the hand of the Scabal Barathea is better than the H&S barathea from the Black Tie book. I already a few items from H&S. It gives me an excuse to try Scabal.

In answer to a couple of questions, I believe the starting price for 2-piece suit from Chan inclusive of fabric is around $1,100 for VBC Super 120, possibly some other less-expensive fabrics.

As for the Chan process, in Hong Kong, it is the same as any other bespoke tailoring operation with multiple fittings. On tour, they customarily take your measurements once, then send you the garment. Some customers request a basted fitting on the tour, but this prolongs getting your completed garment considerably. I didn't bother with the basted fitting. The suit I got fit well, but not as well as the subsequent jackets I have ordered from them. They do create an individualized pattern for you which they can subsequently tweak.

I have purchased one suit, five shirts and 13 jackets from them. I hope to buy a good many more garments from them in my remaining years, which gives you some idea of the esteem I hold them in.

As to the "protocol of meeting up with Chan," consult with their website www.wwchan.com for their U.S. tour schedule and e-mail them to make an appointment.

I'm planning on ordering a spring/summer blazer. Do you remember which hopsack you picked? Was it the "Mandarin"?

This is what choose. I'm not sure that it's technically a hopsack. If so, it's a very open one. Good for warm weather.
