Updated: NCAA's findings in FSU academic-misconduct case released (full document posted)
By Steve Ellis

DEMOCRAT SENIOR WRITER

Florida State's athletic department has been told to vacate wins in multiple sports, including football, as part of the penalties handed down by the NCAA in its ruling on the university's academic-misconduct case.

Included in the penalties are instructions that the university vacate wins where ineligible student-athletes competed in football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's track, baseball, softball and men's golf during 2006 and 2007.

That would include postseason competition, possibly including FSU's national championship in men's outdoor track and field, as well as the women's basketball team's appearance in the NCAA tournament.

FSU has 90 days to identify the ineligible student-athletes and what victories would have to be vacated.

FSU programs also face scholarship reductions in several sports, including football and men's and women's basketball, as part of the case that involved a total of 61 student-athletes and their roles in an online music course.

Why is this bullshit? Because FSU self-reported this relatively minor infraction, and offered to take some pretty harsh sanctions - two years probation, scholarship reductions, etc...

The NCAA said "**** off" and imposed these ridiculous sanctions.

Meanwhile, Reggie Bush gets cars, houses, etc. and the NCAA doesn't even investigate.

Don't expect schools to self-report violations anymore, this is ridiculous.

Thanks. I'm obviously an FSU partisan, but I still think it's absurd.

The NCAA acknowledged that nobody in the athletic administration knew of the cheating.

The penalties are ridiculous. In fact, the penalties we offered (which the NCAA basically doubled) to take were generally considered to be overkill by the sports media.

On the plus side, this vacation of wins probably ends the whole JoePa v. Bowden deathrace for most NCAA wins. Both PSU and FSU can move on.

Anyway, sorry for cluttering up the Entertainment thread with a post of relatively narrow appeal.

I haven't seen anything like that since SMU's football squad got shut down. Wow.

Nothing irks me more than the inconstant application of rules.

Are FSU fans particularly vocal? And your math is horrible. The last ten years we've won one national title and played for a couple more. If you'd've said the last few years, fair enough.

They're acting like the soon-to-be-typical institutional pussies.

Michigan pulled the same lame stunt by revoking their big 10 titles during the fab 5 era.

Like these schools don't think they're doing anything illegal? Just being gutless turds when mama catches them with their hands in the cookie jar 10 minutes before dinner.

**** them all.
