I don't have any trouble believing that. I joined a gym and started working out all the time when I quit smoking. I think part of it was simply finding something to take up time; time spent at the gym was time when smoking wasn't an option and I wasn't able to obsessively think about it like I would when walking outside, going out with friends, between classes, etc.

It also created an awareness of the ways in which my health had obviously been damaged by smoking as well as an awareness of the ways in which it was slowly improving through exercise and smoking cessation.

The endorphin release probably didn't hurt either.

eh i find it bs...i work out w/ my bro 4 times or so a week and hes been smoking since 9th grade

I think it's bs, too. Used to work out for a while then quit because i need more time to smoke

I think you might be missing the point of the article. It doesn't say that people who exercise are necessarily less likely to smoke. It rather suggests that people who are attempting to quit smoking are more likely to succeed if they exercise in addition to using nicotine replacement products, rather than relying exclusively on the latter.
