European sizing question

Hello,

I have a question about European sizing. I have several shirts that all have somewhat different numbering. I'm not sure if these correspond to chest measurment, or neck. For example:

Etro shirt: simply marked 39, I assume this to be the neck in CM

Versace V2 shirt: Marked 15/38, again, I assume this to be neck in inches/neck in CM

Versace Couture shirt: Marked 48, not sure what this means

D&G shirt: Marked 50/36, no clue about this

Dolce & Gabbana crew neck: Marked 38, is this chest size?

Dolce & Gabbana pants, marked 48.

Can someone please explain?

Neck in inches and in cm (roughly correspondant).  Prada, Helmut Lang, most traditional Italian brands use this system for more "formal" shirts.

European size (CoSTUME uses this sizing consistently.)  A 38 cm neck - standardized sizing would have a 38 cm neck wear a 38 US or 48 Eu suit, and so on.

D&G shirt: Marked 50/36, no clue about this

Dolce & Gabbana crew neck: Marked 38, is this chest size?
Yep.  See above note

Dolce & Gabbana pants, marked 48.
32 inches at waist - same as for standard 48 Eu suit.

Can someone please explain?
Looks like you are about 150 lbs and somewhere between 5'8" and 5'11".  The D&G shirt is either a fitted shirt (like their jean shirts) or is too big compared to your other items.  Also looks like you have lots of relatively flamboyant shirts, and probably shop at that Euro-specialist place on Bloor across from Holts (great store) and Harry's (good for midrange to high end traditional stuff - nice house brand accessories too - hopelessly behind otherwise.  They are going to start carrying Seven jeans in the fall.  The salesman told me this like it was some huge relevation, not noticing that I was wearing Seven jeans - which are pretty distinctive.)

Seven jeans fit you well? I have so little luck for these jeans. They seem to fit me like they are girl jeans that were just made 2 sizes too big.

Etro: 39 is between a 15.5 and a 16 collar, I am unsure what it is a mesurment of though. EDIT: Ah yes, it means 39 suit size, as in in between a 38 and a 40 suit size.

V2: yes neck in inches, and 38, is the chest size as you would have a 38 suit.

Versace: 48 means 38 chest, again like suits, roughly a medium.

D&G: 40 (euro size -10 gives english size) is the chest size again.

Dolce: minus 10, and you have the suit size in US terms, as you would have a 38.

I recently got a pair of Sevens at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and they fit nicely. Roomier than my standby Diesel Kratt's or my 501s, but still flattering. I think the sevens are relaxed fit. I was wary of the boot-cut, but it doesn't look as girly as I'd thought. I'm not super-happy with the wash though, too dirty. I still need a pair of neater looking jeans to replace the Kratts, which I've just about killed.

Vman: agreed that Euro sizes can confuse; one needs a little algebra to figure em out.

Thanks for the info, that helps clear everything up.

I knew my size in EU, but just didn't know what the numbers actually referred to.

You are very close with the measurments - 6'0" and around 160 lbs. The D&G shirt (which I'm actually wearing as we speak - first time I've really worn it) is a bit big, but it was an ebay purchase and the seller described it as a medium. I'm gonna buy the 48/34 (I think?) from now on in D&G.

As for shirts, nothing too flambouyant. The Versace Couture/V2 are both minimalistic, solid shirts. Nice cuts, though. The D&G is a light blue with wide spaced navy pinstripes and a bunch of tiny really faint white pinstripes - also has a nice placket detail.

I'm in the midwest, so I make a trip down to Chicago a few times a year for shopping - plus some specialty denim stores in my own city. Ebay has also been good to me.

I've tried Sevens once - but they are just too tight in the thighs for me. Similar to the Diesel X-Rotuck in cut, I believe. If I move up a few sizes so that the thighs fit better, the waist and seat are just too big.

I stick to PDC - fits have always been perfect no matter what model, and the washes are supreme. I'm now the proud owner of 6 or 7 pairs, two of which have been broken in nicely, and I plan on purchasing more in the future.

I like the PDC and Dior Homme. I have a pair of Sevens and the a** is slouchy... Helmut Lang is great too. Get em skinny.

I am with the main concensus on this board : PDC is top (has anyone seen the new "SLM" pant? Black washes and straight leg with distressed features, and is quoted as their slimmest fitting jean. I looked all over the department stores here in San Diego and have yet to see anyone carry it. It looks like it replaced the GTS.

Oh, I just received some Helmut Lang jeans a little while ago, and I really do love them. I got a dark indigo wash straight leg from eBay, and a black straight leg from Yoox. The fit and feel is superb. I am hopefully going to get some white HL's tomorrow afternoon.



Also, last thing, V-Man, I got that Yoko Devereaux shirt that we were talking about a long time ago. I get so many compliments... it's an awesome shirt. I will take a picture tomorrow (today) so you can see the fit. And then later I'm going on a Vegas trip, and the Sak's in Vegas carries YD. (Quickly becoming my favorite independent designer, especially after seeing how amazing their f/w 2004 line is).
