Esquire says no blue OCBD's?

According to the March 2008 issue of Esquire, it's apparently some sort of faux pas to wear a (I assume solid) blue OCBD. I had never heard this before. I happen to like the look of a blue OCBD (especially with a repp or knitted tie). What's the deal with this?

They are idiots. Blue is a staple of the OCBD wardrobe, along with blue/white stripe and white. Next comes pink and pink/white stripe, and then (for me) to a lesser degree yellow and yellow/white stripe.

Red stripe and gray stripe are also nice. Black Fleece had a tan stripe this season, but it didn't fit me.

Yeah, that's about the most preposterous thing I've ever heard.

+1, for me they are in the same category as pink stripe. The Black Fleece grey stripe is also especially nice.

They are nice, you should try them. Growing up, all I wore was the blue stripe and (much less) the red. But last year, I got gray, and really liked it. This year I got pink and found it surprisingly useful.

Page 128 of the March 2008 issue. It is mentioned in "laws" #58 and 59 in the feature "The (New) Laws of Casual Style". Her are the quotes:

"The solid blue buttondown shirt is the Jay Leno of American style."

"There are worse things than being the guy who always wears a blue buttondown. Like being known as the guy who looks he just rolled out of bed or the guy who always smells a little funny. If you're going to settle on a look, get it right."

Earlier in the feature they strongly endorse white OCBD's saying, "When in doubt, a white oxford shirt." That's "law" #1 no less! "Law" #2 says, "That being said, it wouldn't kill you to mix things up every once in a while. Pinstripe shirts are good. Windowpane too."

Also, in "law" #3 they say, Blue gingham. Trust us."

I sure hope I don't get in trouble for plagiarism.

I find that a white OCBD looks good with a blue jacket and dark tie and not much else. Could be just me, though. I do have one, but only one, in pinpoint. All the old RTW ones are gone.

Maybe the key is "always." I can see how they would complain about the guy who wears a blue buttondown and Dockers every day as a mindless biz-cas uniform. But nothing wrong with the shirt itself.

Many guys would do well to upgrade to a blue buttondown and Dockers.

I'm almost certain they don't mean blue OCBD, but rather a generic blue button-front shirt.

It's just snappy writing. Say anything with force and wit, and you can get published.

Loser was probably the wrong word. Should have said "whippersnapper."
