Perhaps this should be under the "gayest article of clothing" post . . . I'm an espadrille fan, but I've never known much about them or evaluated them for quality. A few weeks ago, I bought a pair of "Castaner" espadrilles. Noice, these puppies are the Edward Greens of espadrilles.

I remember hearing about a maker in Capri that supposedly makes some of the best.

Well yeah, but you wouldn't say that if I were dining with two 21 year old girls in Cap d'Antibes . . . not that I'd be busy posting about my "espadrille find" if I were . . .

I suppose it depends on what type of espadrille you have in mind. The ones with straps, in my opinion, certainly deserve abuse. Those with just rope soles and slightly elasticated canvas in, say, navy, can perform a useful function with linen, or shorts, on holiday when sandals are not ideal and loafers aren't either. This is the kind of thing (from espadrille.co.uk):

I've heard people swearing by a producer in Barcelona (that made some for Picasso or Gaudi, or possibly both.

Leather insole, very comfortable, transparent rubber over the jute on the sole. A little pricey for espadrilles, but what the hell, you can't take it with you.

I've been wearing some from ropeysoles, a UK based company. Great selection of colors and fabrics, cheap, and easy and quick shipping.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
