+1. Would prefer a classic Carmina wingtip or simple monk.

If I recall correctly, (didn't bother to go back in the thread) but Mike explained something like there is enough of the shell for 10-12 pairs and could be enough for 18 given the design incorporates another material. Didn't hear a mention of getting more ruby shell, so I do not thinks its a issue of waiting. Just what guys want to do.

To be forthright, I presented the makeup mainly because I like the design, and think the ruby shell would be a perfect fit. I like shell a lot , though I hate how it creases. The suede combo wouldn't have that issue, a plus for a handsome shoe to continue looking handsome for quite a long time.

Yes, plz. Though I have to echo the chorus and say that I'd much prefer this on the Rain last. And suede with the calf cross strap gets my vote.

Seconding this. Although the price might be lower for a half-shell shoe (or it might even not be lower), if I'm going to appreciate the Ruby shell, I want a lot of it. Given that I think shell wingtips look weird with the creasing, I suggest a cap-toe single monk.
I've never owned a shell shoe before, but isn't the creasing a *huge* part of shell itself? If you hate that, why not just go with calfskin? Also, a spectator shell wingtip would still have creasing toward the back (leg) end of the W.
*Last* question, eh? I'll show myself out.

    Hey guys!

Okay, I'm gonna work to get some styles online tomorrow evening. That way, we can have them close next Monday along with the three wingtip boots from MC, and I can submit the orders to Carmina as a big block. Here's what I've got on the list:

    Jodphur Boot
We've got a bunch of ideas going around, but I'm thinking that people are leaning towards the Rain last, and a suede/calf combo with suede being the dominant material. I think that this might be the way to go. With the wingtip boots, and all of the Bal Boots, we ran quite a bit on the Forest, and we've done two calf/suede makeups where calf is the dominant material. Doing this in a dark brown suede with a chocolate calf strap would be so elegant that it hurts. It would be such an excellent match to really rich flannel and tweed trousers. That dark brown suede would contrast nicely with a medium brown sole, so I'd match it to a double leather sole, like on our "Sinclair" boot. That will give it a great dressy edge too.

So, with this, I propose: Rain Last, Chocolate Suede with Chocolate Calf Strap and Double Leather sole.

    Ruby Shell Style
That two-tone makeup is SMOOTH, but I'd agree with some of the posters who suggested using all of the Ruby Shell. I think that we'll have plenty to go around (I haven't had a shell makeup order exceed 10 units yet). Given how special the color is, it's probably best to keep it to a simple, dressy shape and let the shell do the talking. I'd propose three shapes, all with a leather sole and flat welt:

    1. Austerity Brogue on the Rain Last (our "classic" shape)

    2. Single Monk Strap on the Rain or Alcudia Last and brass buckle (I have this shape already on file with Carmina, it's brilliant!)

    3. Captoe Bal with perfs on the Rain or Alcudia Last.

So, I bought these shoes from Ludwig Reiter earlier this year, and I'm in love with the shape. Check 'em out:

Now, our "Ellison" shape on the Rain last is quite similar, you just need to take away the medallion:

I think that this would be killer in Ruby Shell. The Rain last will give it that chiseled toe, the Alcudia will be more rounded, closer to the Reiter shoe. Either would work wonderfully IMO.

And lets save that two-tone makeup for later. That might be a killer idea to do in Burgundy calf and Burgundy suede. A bit more wearable than Ruby on Red - but still very striking -and about $275 less.

    WHOLECUT
I'm definitely keen to get this one rolling too. Want to do something really dressy and versatile? Since launching Carmina in our shop, Caramel calfskin has been our best-selling calfskin color, and I have to say, it gets really gorgeous with age. It looks incredibly boss with navy or grey trousers, and I think that it will show off the wholecut shape beautifully. What if we do a wholecut in that, maybe add a medallion to the toe? Rain or Inca last?

I think single monk on rain in Ruby would really let the ruby shell do the talking, and is more understated to contrast the unique color

Mike, I never agree with all of your suggestions, but I think we can all appreciate you bringing some stability to this crazy thread. My thoughts:

I'll pass on the Jodhpur, but plenty of you chaps seem to want Rain, so that makes sense.
I don't like shell + wingtips, and I *love* that Alcudia-lasted single monk, so I'll go with Alcudia single monk > Alcudia bal > Austerity brogue
Wherever you go with the wholecut, I'll be keeping up to date. Sounds like we're off to a great start.

Edit: But seriously, I might attack some of you if that ruby project ends up on Rain [IMG]

Are we still trying to do the brass (gold colored) buckle on this? I'd love that. I'm in for all this with the exception of the forest last. Are there that many people who want the Forest?

I would like the ruby in the austerity brogue or in the captoe that Mike posted above (Captoe would be my first pic). I would have to pas on the monk. I love the design but just recently ordered a MTO on that exact design.

    Mike,

It was a pleasure meeting with you this morning by the Brooklyn store!

I recently have moved to New York and after ordering ALL the previous boot makeups, I had to check out the store.

Mike was extremely nice, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to talk to.

I look forward to ordering the brown suede/calf jodhpur boots on the next preorder as well.

That seems to have been a typo, as Mike's post now states that the Jodhpur will be on Rain.
