English names

Can anyone explain why fancy English people hyphenate their names?

Rigel Rhys-Smith

Also, what pub names have you encountered? My favorite is still the Eagle and the Child in Oxford.

Rhys is a pretty famous Welsh name. I'm not sure why the hyphen.

To maintain the family names/identities . Jane Smith marries Peter Jones. Becomes Jane Smith-Jones. I suppose it carries some upper class connotations.

The Queen's Legs still close at 11pm, despite changes in licensing regulations.

My mother's family name can be traced way back to the Doomsday book and the Norman Conquest of England. As the only Male of this generation (one sister and three female cousins) if i hadn't taken the name paired with my fathers name, then it would have been lost to the sands of time. I kind of feel responsible for preserving a family name thats several hundred years old.

Following the Industrial Revolution , the landed aristocracy (Fontleroy) were hurting economically, while the newly wealthy industrialists (Smiths) wanted to translate some of that money into social standing/class. By the late 19th Century it was very common for the nobility to marry-off their daughters to wealthy industrialists and merchants, leading to many 'Fontleroy-Smiths'.

It's ironic that Dublin was founded as a Viking fort by Scandinavian conquerors who pretty much pwned the Irish for years.
