Well, it looks like we might have the beginnings of a cast shaping up here for a movie that has been long overdue:

I haven't seen Hugo or True Grit yet (I know, I know) so I don't know what kind of performance Asa Butterfield will turn out as Ender or Hailee Steinfeld as Petra, but my primary concern for this one movie has been the age of the actors. One of the aspects I enjoyed so much about the first book was just how young the kids in battle school were to have been shouldered with such a task as defeating the buggers. So, finding actors who look young enough to play a 6 to 9 year old child prodigies/strategos always seemed to be the main challenge in my mind.

I know Card has guarded this screenplay with his life (which is why it has taken them this long to make the movie), but what do you think of the director, Gavin Hood? I haven't seen Rendition or Tsotsi yet, but I did see X-Men Origins: Wolverine and just didn't think much of it one way or the other. The subject matter of both Tsotsi (violence and youth) and Rendition (ethics, espionage, etc.) gives me hope that Hood has covered some of the ground explored in Ender's Game and I'm sure that if Card will be heavily involved with the film that we'll get the movie we all want to see.

So, now the big question remains, who will fill out the rest of the main cast? I'm trying to imagine who they are thinking Harrison Ford will play at his age (surely not Graff). Mazer Rackham?

    Ender Wiggin: Asa Butterfield

    Peter Wiggin:

    Valentine Wiggin:

    Colonel Graff:

    Major Anderson:

    Petra Arkanian: Hailee Steinfeld

    Bean:

    Alai:

    Dink:

    Bonzo:

    Mazer Rackham:

Who do you think should fill out the remaining leading roles?

If this is successful, which sequels or series should be tackled next (Ender Quartet) (Shadow Quartet)?

I very, very guardedly look forward to this movie. I don't really have high hopes, knowing what Hollywood typically does to adaptations*, as are I'm sure most fans of the book(s). I can't offer any insight as I've seen only Origins (and didn't really like it), but I hope and pray Card is as protective as he sounds.

*I'm not against change per se, but Hollywood seems to fuck up most adaptations and turn them into movies for retarded people.

Ender's Game had a lot of silly things in it that were OK in a book when you really had to use your imagination, but would be very lame in any other medium, even comics. Little kids having very intelligent views of social situations, some kid becoming a world leader when he makes a LiveJournal, all that stuff.

I cant imagine this being a good movie, and if it is, it would have to be very different from the book.

My favorite parts of the book were the descriptions of space living. The awkward feeling of zero-G for the first time, the slight curve you saw in hallways. The floors that would light up to lead you, how the small pond with the upward sloping embankments made Ender feel comfortable when he returned to earth, the inhuman architecture of the old bugger base where he is in near the end of the book ect...

No matter who makes it, that will pretty much be a given.

For a long time, I considered this one of my favourite novels. I reread it recently, and while I still enjoyed it, realized it was nowhere near as impressive as I remembered. That said, I hope to God they don't mess this movie up. I still love the novel for what it was to me, and would hate to see this go wrong.

Kinda digging the Maori moko on Mazer Rackham/Ben Kingsley. I don't remember that being in the book.
