Got a ball to attend in a couple of days (I know, short notice for me too

) and have a day and a half to get a tuxedo etc. If I go the rental way, I'd like to spend $150 or less on the whole thing.

I did consider just buying one. Went into Sym's on Park Ave, saw a couple of OK-looking tuxes in the $200-250 range, but once you add shirt, cummerbund, shoes, etc, it would easily be $350-400.

Any tried and tested recommendations that carry good styles and are a decent value? Should I even bother with Men's Warehouse?

I don't think you'll get much cheaper than $250. As much as it pains me to say this, Jos A Bank has a decent tuxedo if you don't want to spend much once you alter it a bit. However, you'd still have to throw in all the accessories, which is going to bring it above $400. Hell, good shoes alone are $300 if you don't already have a pair of black oxfords you can polish up real good.

If that's too much, you don't have much choice but to rent. Please dear good make sure that it A) fits, and b) isn't a notch lapel.

If you feel like you'll have opportunity to wear the tux again soon, then buy it. It'll look much better. Otherwise, rental looks to be the only path for you.

Your in NYC. Buy the real deal and go to some symphonies, the theater, etc. the rest of the year to justify your purchase.

Renting a tuxedo is an unwise financial decision. You're better off buying a used one and then reselling after your event.

Check craigslist.

I agree on the value of owning a tuxedo but don't think it's wise to make such a big purchase on a 2 days' notice. It would be alterations hell, besides I just haven't budgeted $1,000 that a decent tux + formal shoes would probably cost me.
