A famous - and now deceased - journalist & bender once commented that in order to display true elegance, one's waist should measure less than his inside leg. Would you agree?

I wouldnt agree in general, but if your inseam is longer than your waist size, you will look really good wearing almost anything. I'd say most male models have this proportion.

I'm sure that there are plenty of people that look elegant that don't have those measurements and plenty of people that do have those measurements that aren't elegant. So - no - that rule is arbitrary and pointless.

I'm about .5" away from "true elegance" (31.75" inseam, 32" waist)

that last half inch has been a real f'ing ***** tho

Much closer than me. I'm 3" away (33" inseam, 36" waist). You have more elegance power than me.

While clothes will look better on a lean physique, this will hardly assure elegance.

I have a 32" waist and 36" inseam, but I've never been accused of being elegant. In my youth, I was described as "gawky", but never "elegant".

I don't even think it's a necessary, let alone a sufficient condition for elegance.

An interesting proposition.

The illustrated figures in the early Esquire magazines might fit your criteria and they certainly look elegant. However, when I consider how skinny I would have to be given my 32" inseam, it seems impossible, people would think I was anorexic. I have a 35" waist but would probably look best with a 33".

I'm the reverse, or nearly. 35" waist, 32.5" inseam. And I'm quite confident that I'm not too fat to be elegant. Indeed, I'm on the lean side of average. Pundits will have to find some other explanation for my inelegance.

cheapmutha, I think you're onto something. I think elegance has to do with how a person moves and carries himself, not with any static picture and certainly not anything like measurements.
