In another unnamed thread people talk about the different ways to eject a computer drive.

I normally just pull it out.

Is this safe?

You mean a drive such as a thumb drive? It's always better to eject it, as removing it without stopping it can cause data corruption/errors.

I would say there are very few circumstances in life where "just pulling it out" is a safe bet...arrows, teeth, dicks, cars, I really can't think of anything...

There's always the risk of corrupting the data on your drive, but I have done it in a hurry with no ill effects. I wouldn't do it with any data that you don't have solid backups for.

I have done it about 2000 times without a hitch. I've never disconnected a drive doing anything BUT just pulling it out.

This was how I was. Then a few months ago, I just pulled my iPod out without ejecting it. The "do not disconnect" image with the red circle on the screen froze that way. I had to let the battery die completely, which sucked b/c it took forever since I'd just charged it. Anyway, none of the info was lost or anything, but since then I've been making sure I eject errthing.

I used to do this years ago and, like MetroStyles, never ran into a problem.

Lately, I have more important things on my drives and figure better safe than sorry despite having backups.

I wouldn't do it with a ipod while it is syncing. That has wiped my music clean a few times.

What I meant was pulling out a USB or a HD when it is not in use. That said, I guess if you want to be 100% sure your should go through the disconnection procedure. I mean, if you are a ***** and all.

Let me rephrase my question. Has anyone ever experienced permanent damage to his USB flash drive and/or its content?

I've had data recovery warnings. In the end it all amounted to nothing. My data was safe.

Killed a 64 MB MP3-player back some years by pulling it out. Turned it into a USB stick without additional functions.

The biggest "Eject is for sissies"-advocate in my office killed a 8 GB USB drive recently by pulling it out while transferring data.

So yes, I've accepted that it can be better to spend the 5 seconds for ejecting.

I always do the "safely remove" procedure, but I just wish that after, what, seven or eight years, Microsoft would fix the damn thing so it actually works consistently, instead of just telling me that the drive is in use when I know it isn't. Or, if it really is in use, tell me what's using it.

i do safely remove but it often doesnt work/do anything so i just pull it out and nothing happens. just avoid pulling it out while you're transferring data and you should be fine
