EG - shoe width?

I intend to buy EG Adelaide in 8E (UK) online and don't know whether they will be too tight for me, as I have a rather wide foot.

Usually, I wear C&J in 8F which are okay regarding the width and JL 8.5 EE on the 8000 last.

Thanks for your help.

I have a US 11E foot and the UK 10.5E in EG 202 last fits just fine. It's snug to start, then loosens up in a few wearings.

Several people have reported here that EG widths are closer to American widths than English. I would tend to agree.

If you wear EE fittings in John Lobb shoes, then E in Edward Green will not fit you. (JL fits wider then EG.)

You might want to go ½ size up in EG, but that is something you can try in the shop; I wouldn't recommend you do it by mail-order without trying.

I have this theory (unproven), most people buy their shoes too short and could gain by going ½ size up and a width down.

I suspect you are correct. But it should be noted that the actual fit of a 9E is not really the same as a 9.5D. However, it might be a better fit for a particular individual. Unfortunately, far too few people are properly measured for shoes; once they think they know their size and fitting they keep buying shoes in that size regardless of the manufacturer or despite changes in their own physical conditions; they don't recognize that various lasts and styles accomodate their feet differently; or they put style before fit and comfort. The world would be a much happier place is individuals would really try shoes on before purchasing them.

Thanks for your comments.

Usually, I do try shoes on before I buy them and the idea to buy shoes "untested" online came to me by reading this forum... Nevertheless, as I don't own any EG's yet, I need your opinion what the tightness of them are in general.

JL told me that their shoes are considerable tighter than C&J and advised me to go for a half-size larger pair which turned out to be true.

The question: If you take both C&J's and an EG's in 8E(or F), is the size comparable or not?

My experience is that EG width fittings are more akin to American widths and are a bit more snug than other British makers.

Medwards, you can't mean that for equivalent letters (e.g., an E-fitting in a C&J vs. an E-fitting in an EG) that the EG would be snugger, can you? If, in fact, EG fittings are closer to US widths than are other British makers', EGs (for a given letter) should be less snug, shouldn't they? That is to say, an EG E-fitting should be a little looser than a C&J E-fitting. This woulld seem to follow from the information that, in general (and including C&J here), a UK E-fitting corresponds to a US D-width, whereas an EG E-fitting might correspond more to a US E-width. In such a case, the C&J (say) should be the wider shoe, shouldn't it? Or do I have this wrong?

I worded the posting very poorly. My experience is that Edward Green sizing is more akin to US sizing. A US 9.5D would generally equate to an Edward Green 9D. A commensurate shoe from most other British makers -- including Crockett & Jones -- would probably be a 9E. In order words, an EG 9E would be wider than a C&J 9E. At the same time, EG believes in a rather snug fit and consequently a properly fitted EG shoe may feel a bit more snug than that to which some individuals are accustomed. At least that as my personal experience. Certainly, this varies depending on the shape of one's foot and the last involved.

I have the opposite experience. I find EGs shoes to be particularly narrower than its British bretheren.

In this case, to answer the OPs question, based on medwards statement, and my experience with EG on the 202 last, CJ F-fitting should equal EG-E fitting.

If Bengal-stripe is correct, however, the CJ-F-fitting is wider than we think, and EG-E would be barely wide enough.

Having recently taken delivery of an EG MTM oxford on the 888, I'm still trying to negotiate the hinterland between "snug" and "uncomfortable". Not sure that the snug philosophy is for me...

This is a good example of the differences in lasts. The EG 606 is an almost perfect last for me. The fit is snug...there is no extra roominess but the shoe is perfectly comfortable and I am unaware of any tightness when I wear it. On the other hand, the EG 888 feels far too narrow in the forefoot for me. I would think of that fit as uncomfortable. I wouldn't consider that as "snug"...rather it simply is not a good nor appropriate fit for me.

It seems that the last will make or break the fit for you. I wear a 7.5 D in most US sizes but when I ordered my EGs at the recent trunk show, I dropped down to a 6.5 and out to an E width on the 82 last. I could fill out the D width fine, but the elongated shape of the 82 left too much room in the toe and my heel slipped out a bit. So, the width was fine, but the length was too long. That's why it was recommended that I go down a half size and out to an E, since the D width would have been too tight in the smaller size.
As long as you can return your shoes to the retailer, go ahead and get the size you think will fit. You'll have to experiment to hone in on you correct size for a given last.
