EG Antiquing?

In the thread Shoe pictorial index; (http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=18298) the EG catalog lists most colors as XXXX Antique.

Do all EG colors (excepting black of course) have antiquing applied?

I ask because I bought the Chelsea on the 606 last in Burgundy during the sale. They have arrived and I love the fit of the shoe (the 606 last fits my high instep foot better than the RLPLs I have in the 888 last) and the look and the leather.

However the leather is burgundy with no antiquing at all. Many of the pics I see in the pictorial thread show burgundy with the antiquing very apparent. Was this done by applying black creme to the shoe after it arrived? (I have very successfully done this to my dark oak Polo Bentons to antique them nicely). Or was this the condition of the shoe as it arrived?

My Edwardian RLPL MacKays are very clearly antiqued at the factory. I suppose I would expect the EG in Chestnut, or Burgundy to also be factory antiqued. Maybe not as antiqued as the JL Museum Calf colors but certainly more so than a single color leather.

Thanks in advance for your experience on this issue.

Normally all EG shoes in smooth calf leather are antiqued (thus excluding suede and, possibly, "˜country calf"˜). I don't know why your shoes weren't antiqued, maybe it was a special order and was requested that way. EG shoes are usually made in semi-finished leather and get their final coloring on the completed shoe. That obviously was done on your pair, just without adding the darker low-lights (for whatever reason).

Of course even without artificial antiquing, a natural patina will develop; it just takes longer.

I will do that. I wore them out shopping today. I like the fit of the 606 last on my feet. Much more comfortable than the 888 US 9Ds in my 2 pair of MacKays. In fact enough more comfortable that I wonder if Polo asks for their shoes to be made a bit snug.

I will also add slight touches of black polish to the toe and the heel area to start a bit of an antique look.

Very, very comfortable. Fit as nice as my JL Suttons on the 8000 last. The JLs have a better leather look with the Museum Calf antiquing but even the 606 last from EG is much more elegant from the top (to my eye) than the JL 8000.
