Hi

I found a pair of edward green shoes on approximately 70% off. They will cost me around 320€.

The reason for the huge discount is that there is a slight colour difference and the fact that they are grey. They also have a suede upper, which is not conventional.

I am thinking of buying these shoes, and turn the leather black while still keeping the grey suede. Is this possible for someone with no experience in shoe dying? Or is it a complicated job?
Moreover, is this it a great deal considering the work that has to be done?

In my experience it's never worth buying something with the thought that you can maybe make it wearable. At the very least if you're going to plunk down 320€ on them, you should spend the extra money to take them to a professional to get them dyed.

Thank you for the reply

If it would be an easy, inexpensive, and safe job to do myself, then it will be worth it.
... but with my experience in dying shoes, I agree that it would be better to take them to a proffesional.

they look great but I would only buy if you think you can really wear them... I did the mistake plenty of times to buy something cheap but ended up not really loving it. That being said I would totally wear them as is. No experience in regards to dying...

The last picture shows that the right shoe is yellowish. I would have to atleast use a good amount of grey shoes cream to cover that yellow tone. Since that is something that has to be taken care of consistently, I think it is better to dye them again. I agree that I am about to fall into the "They look ok, but they are a bargain" trap . The question is if they will still be a bargain after all that has to be done.

Call me crazy but I think those shoes are totally awesome as is. Even with the color difference.

That said, don’t buy something you intend to make into a project for yourself unless that type of project is something you have experience with and know you can get done well.

I DO think it’s a good idea to do as @krudsma suggested and use the savings to have the recolor professionally done if you otherwise love the shoes.

I really like the shoes apart from the color, so I will head over to a proffesional for an estimate on the price for the job.

If you're in the UK, might be worth taking them to EG to have them re-dyed. Personally, EG, along with G&G, are best with their dye work. It just looks like the lighter shoe was the display model.

Keep in mind if you have someone else dye them, EG might not be so keen to make future changes on the uppers. I'd personally go dark grey on them. I have a pair of G&G balmoral boots in that colorway that works great.

A professional patina job is like 100 dollars/euros, if you need to factor in extra work.

Those shoes will be difficult to wear well. I suspect they'll sit in your closet for years before you sell them. The balmoral design is too dressy for jeans. The color and suede/ calf combination is too odd for classic tailoring. Plus they're in a mismatched color. You have to be a certain kind of dandy dresser to be able to pull that stuff off.

After reading your answers, and reflecting on my own situation.. I am going to let these shoes pass. I will have to get them dyed professionaly and it will be too costly. Addiotionally, the cost per wear will likely be quite high. Thanks for sharing your opinions and advice.

What size and where would you be able to get them? I would wear them no problem.
