So, turns out these boots were actually on the 72 last. I love the fit. It’s like a slightly roomier 202 (especially at the toe area).
Now, do I love the Ridgeway sole? I don’t know. **** seems STIFF.
I may have these soles swapped out for Vibram Gumlite. Anyone else have any thoughts on Ridgeway? Am I just being a diva?

Odd, I have 2 pairs of boots (no EG though) on Ridgeway and they are much softer than Dainite studded or Commando. Even in winter (when it can get quite cold here). I do prefer them in winter over other rubber soles because of their grip.

As Crafty said, Vibram makes a Ridgeway clone (Londra) that is supposed te be even softer.

I think the 72 looks very attractive for a more casual pair of Galways.

In terms of fit, I only have a pair on the 82 last, E width (standard) with leather soles, and it's a bit roomy for me. The heels in particular would ideally be a bit narrower, and there's also room in the ball.

I wonder if I should go to a D width on the 72 last, and even on the 202. Unfortunately no one stocks those on my size. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks!

You may think about avoiding 72 last all together depending on how much room you have in the toe and instep. I think you'll find greater heel and ball width in 202 in the same size as 82 so you may find there is more room even in a "D" width comparably

So just to clarify - you're saying that the 202 has more width than the 72 in same size? And 72 has more volume / vertical room for toes?

If so, it sounds like 202 in D could make sense. I can't go down one size due to length.

Thanks, @jischwar. If anyone else has any inputs, really appreciate it.

I'd say the 72 and 202 have the same-ish width, but 72 has more instep room and more vertical toe room. They have a similar heel, which is larger than 82.

The 82 in E width fits me very well. I can also go down to a D width in 202 for a good fit.

Defo a diva…???
Much my preferred sole.
+1

I'm a sucker for ridgeway! Bought my first pair of boots on ridgeway last year, and now it's my preferred sole. I preferred DL soles when I worked out of the office, but these days I wear my shoes mostly outdoors and Ridgeway is the best option IMO.

I would agree with that which is why I suggested @George Red open up his heart and give them a shot.

Only thing better, but uglier, is a Commando Sole. Other than that, Ridgeway on a boot is an amazing combination.

Funny thing with the 72. Heard a bunch about it, but came after my time. Thus, never had a chance to even try it on. The 82 last, on the other hand, is God's gift to men's shoes. ??

Yep - I also enjoy the feel of Itshide commado under my feet but IMO it can ruin aesthetics unless we're talking about your quintessential English country boots (Tricker's Stow, Sargent Hanover etc)

The Itshide commado is fantastic, but there's a time and a place for it. Like you said, should be mandatory to throw those unto pairs of Stows Hanovers, Snowden, etc. Conversely, should be a crime to throw them unto a pair of boots being used for more refined situations.

I happen to like the 72 a lot better than the 202, but I agree that the 82 is a wonderful last and probably EG’s best.

Under one roof, it is really hard to find better lasts produced by one company. EG has the 82, 606, 202, and 184. I don't have first hand experience with the 72 or 915, but they look beautiful as well.

Fit pics of the size 8.5/9Ds Sandringham I picked up for $325. Some notes

• Found the 202 last alittle long in the toebox and more roomy, anyone else describe it that way?
• Turns out they're Bauxite and Rosewood calf!
• Also have the distinct EG made expressly for Leffot on the inside
• Came in Marvelous condition, honestly if they didn't have sole wear I'd wonder if they were worn.
• price on the box says $1125, guessing these must be a few years old atleast pre 2016, if anyone can identify?
