I got 5 ties for a couple of bucks (plus shipping.) Two of them are 3 3/4, which I guess I can wear (I'm a skinny guy, 5'10 140lbs). A few of them are 4 inch. Should I not wear the 4 inch at all?

Tiecrafters must be run by the people who post on here. I already looked... it costs about 40x more than the cost of a single tie that I got on ebay to alter it.

You shouldn't wear them if you dont think they look good.

so you wasted your money on 5 ties that dont work and the time spent hunting them down, and you think that paying $70 for one that works is money wasted?

Would a tailor be able to slim down a tie?

I do not work for tiecrafters but I recommend them. I recently had them narrow a tie for me from 3 3/4" to 3" wide. They're expensive, but they do a good job and I'm not aware of any other company that specializes in cleaning and altering ties for a cheaper price.

Some tailors may agree to alter your ties, but whether or not they do a good job is another story. You can always take a cheap tie to your tailor and see how they do before giving them a bunch of nicer ties. The tailor I go to is generally expensive so I didn't bother taking ties to him b/c I would not have saved any money over just sending the tie to tiecrafters.

I'm a couple inches shorter than you and about 25 lbs heavier and I would not wear a 4 inch tie. Actually, I generally do not wear any tie over 3.5". You'd probably be better off with a tie 3"-3.25" wide.

Depends on your shoulder size and the dimensions of the lapels in your jackets so that they are all in proportion.

OP: I went through the same growing pains. I just put the 3.5-4 inch ties away maybe for my brother or if the times change.

I've had 1 tie's threading fixed, shortened and narrowed - it was pricey but worth it for the particular tie.

I would agree with everything in this post, and also recommend Tiecrafters. Just over this summer I've had Tiecrafters work on about ten of my ties. The results have been very satisfactory.

The worst part of dealing with Tiecrafters is the shipping--but, if you are sending a bunch of ties, then it's not so bad. The fee of $17.50 to narrow a tie is extremely reasonable to me--especially since a Charvet, Brioni or other high quality tie will retail at over $180 these days.
