Earmuffs

I live in Canada, and it is cold. I hate wearing hats because I look stupid in them and then when I take them off my hair is messed up. I'm thinking about earmuffs as a solution. I can picture wearing earmuffs with a hat over top, but is it OK to wear earmuffs on their own? I see people doing this sometimes, but they are the ugly fleece earmuffs that wrap around the back of your head; I am considering traditional earmuffs, perhaps made of fur. Do these earmuffs require a hat to cover up the strap thing that goes over your head? My coat, for reference's sake, is brown tweed herringbone. Also, I am 23, so trying to avoid old man type headgear (although I'm not 100% sure what is and is not age appropriate, and am not too picky about the issue).

Does anyone here wear earmuffs, and if so, how?

Of course, this is remedied by wearing ear muffs...

Man, hats are tough, but I like to keep my whole head warm.
