    Thinking about diving in, looking at some wool and challis.

    Some of the donegals that he has posted are nice (on the site and similar pieces at Exquisite Trimmings). At 9cm, I found the knots too big for me. For those who have ordered wool ties where the fabric is a bit thicker, how have the knots been and have you been able to make modifications to taper them a bit? Can they make adjustments easily by discussing over email (e.g. sample photos from buyer)?

    Also, I'm assuming with Fedex, one often gets hit with duties? If so, what does that usually add to the price?

    Cheers.

    Yes to big knot.
    Yes modifications can be made, some people seem to have an excellent experience with it, I found the English extremely limited at best. However, responses are extremely fast. Not sure if that makes up for the miscommunication...

    Duties, yes. Aruond $50 or more for 3-4 ties.

    Is there a way to see where new fabrics are posted? Or just click through 100s of pages?

    Good to know. May I ask what size shirt collar you wear?

    Cheers,

    How shall I measure, Ac?

    Here's a recent pic with my standard collar to give you an idea. That's an 8.5cm cotton, unlined tie though the cotton is on the thicker side. I would not want a knot bigger than that.

    I have a picture of the 9cm Cappelli that Shaya Green provided me, in a brown donegal. Fabric was great, knot was too big for me. I'll look for it.

    Found it:

    This fabric looks to be available on line. ET has it in a 9cm. I love the fabric but not the knot. Less tapered than the above tie. This is a problem I have found with other thick tweed fabrics for ties. I have no doubt Cappelli could cut the tie so that the knot is more tapered, but can I communicate this with him since I have almost no Italian? Curious if others have tried and succeeded for thicker wools?

    ^^^^

    Sorry. I wasn’t clear. I just meant “What is your OTR collar size?” Mine is US 15. I only ask so that people with your collar size (or close to it) can answer your question (e.g., if you’re a 14.5, getting advice regarding knot size from someone who’s an 18 can be dicey).

    That first tie (and it’s knot) is lovely, by the way.

    By chance FedEx just knocked on my door. Here, then, are the stats from my first order (a twill print):

    Ordered Monday 6/29
    Shipped Monday 7/6
    Arrived Wednesday 7/8

    Shipped in a FedEx “Large Box” 12 3/8 X 3 X 17 1/2 [!]
    Declared Value on Custom Form: “105” (currency not specified)

    Actual Cost: 105 EUR = 120.54 USD (PayPal linked to a Capital One credit card)

    Regarding customs, the last time I checked (about a year ago) it didn’t kick in until the declared value hit 200 USD. After that there was a charge of ca. 11%.

    Cheers,

    Ac

    Could just be that I tie a terrible knot [IMG]

    I speak with Patrizio in English all the time. There might be very specific things that he might not understand but it's still worth a shot.

    If you're going to be in London at the beginning of September you can speak with him in person [IMG]

    Ah, thanks. I'm about a 15 inch collar measured around the neck collar band.

    I take it the Euro was closer to 1.2 when you ordered. Would love to see pics of your new tie, knotted!

    @davesmith

    No criticism was intended Shaya!

    I have a Drake's donegal tweed that is thick and ties a similar knot, and as we discussed via email, I think, thicker fabrics will knot thickly. For my neck size, tho, I think that's too big but bigger collars should do fine (as Ac is pointing out) and I know some people prefer thicker knots.

    I hope to be in London for a month next summer. Perhaps I will meet you then.

    Just a quick shot to give you an idea of the knot size. It’s twill silk #ZZZA6, width 8,5 cm - 3,35 inch, standard three-fold lined. Seen here with a size 15 Tyrwhitt sky blue twill, spread collar.

    @Academic2

    Hard to beat that. 8.5cm would be ideal. Nice pick up.

    @sprout2

    You've had wools with knots that were bigger than you like?

    Hi all,

    Am I to understand that shipping to the United States is 25 euro?

    Yes, for up to four ties. For five (non-outlet) ties, shipping is free.

    Hmmm, intriguing...some of the seasonal fabrics look exquisite, and Cappelli's seem to be highly rated amongst the SF community.

    Thank @Mr. Six
