Dunhill Facet 1936

Hi all can some of you watch experts out there give me an opinion on the Dunhill Facet 1936 (Brown Lizard Skin Strap):

I have the chance to get it at half the retail price. I am not a watch expert but I love all things art deco and so have fallen in love with the shape and design.

I really wouldn't waste your money. Buy a JLC Reverso if you like Art-Deco.

Isn't a reverso a lot more expensive? Having read the threads re: Dunhill watches - I realise they aren't exactly in the same league as the top designers but I get the feeling most people think they are good value for money and I suppose quite a distinctive design.

I realise they use a standard movement (ETA? - I'm still learning) but I've not heard anything negative about the actual build quality

Get a second hand JLC Reverso, it will last longer, you'll get far more for your money, and the factory will have the parts for it when it needs to be serviced in the long away future, unlike the dunhill. JLC is probably not going to go out of business in the forseable future. A. Dunhill seems to be losing money at the moment, so if you buy one of their almost £2k watches, what are you going to do in 25 years when it needs a service but their factory has closed because they might have gone out of business?

Any watch over £1,000 should be for life, consider this when making your investment, and very much like a business investment, you invest in the company - its longevity, and reliance.

Thanks for the reply again Jimmy. Will take the Reverso into consideration and have a hunt about. Just a sidenote though, what is the general feeling on Dunhill watches then? I own a couple of pens and lighter and the build quality seems lovely. Was wondering if it spills over into their watches (even though they use the standard ETA movement).

I have a Dunhill Cityscape Traveller and it has served me well. Dunhill have repaired and serviced it whenever necessary. If you like their designs go ahead.

I am not a watch anorak but anyone who supposes that any one company is not going to go out of business these days is either in possesion of inside information or thinking wishfully.

If you are looking for value auctions by firms such as Bonhams often have a selection of watches at well below shop prices.
