I've just read an article on a basic wardrobe, which referred to a "semi-solid" grey suit as a basic. This is not a term I'm familiar with. At the risk of parading my ignorance, can anyone clarify what this term means?

The context is that I am looking at getting a MTM suit. I have most of the basics covered, but this may be a gap in my wardrobe. Before I go to much further, I'd like to be clear on what it is.

Never heard it before... perhaps they're referring to self pattern?

I think Jovan is right, they probably mean that the suit has no pattern that's obvious from a few feet away, but may be variegated in some way up close. For example a very subtle herringbone or tight pick and pick or nailhead can look solid from only a couple of feet away, so it fulfills the same function, while not being quite as plain as a true plain weave solid.

I'd like to add my agreement to the previous two posters.

Although I'm not sure this is a basic.

I thnk it means that objects approaching the suit have a fifty-fifty chance of passing through it without interference. This is due to special properties of the weave and a mutant ability known as "phasing."

That would be my guess as well. I suppose it could also mean just about any very subtle pattern/color combination. I have a dark gray suit with orange/pink windowpane that is so subtle you really have to pay attention to see it...so I guess that could be semi-solid, too.
