Hey,

Since I know that we have quite a few audio/hi-fi experts around here; a question.

This what I am trying to do:

I have completely legaly

obtained a full blu ray version of Toy Story 3. This is on my macbook pro ( it includes the full dts-hd ma 7.1). I have an access to 8 high quality/resolution studio monitors that we run through m-audio firewire interface. Is there a software (mac or win) that will play these files and decode the audio correctly for this mindblowing 7.1 experience?

Is it worth it?

thanks,

Yes on Windows, no on Mac OS. But the Windows support for multichannel PCM output generally requires a GPU that can output that through HDMI because of the DRM in BD. In your case, you'd have to predecode the DTS-HD MA soundtrack to PCM, store it as an 8-channel wav or something similar, and then play that back with the movie. It's a PITA, and you may want to just use a real BD player instead.

Simply reading that reply was harder than just using a real BD player.

Also I can tell you right now, Toy Story is not and never will be, worth all that trouble.

No. Toy Story 3 is NOT a mind blowing experience.

Thanks Andre. I was affraid that might be the case. If i predecode the soundtrack is there a reason I can not do this on OS X? Is it the video? The reason why I have to do it this way is because I do not have a BD player or a receiver that will send the stuff the right way. I need to do this only one time so I might mess with it, and it does not hurt to learn about how this stuff works.

The reasoning behind choosing toy story is that it is one of the only titles that comes with true 7.1 surround (instead of 5.1 + 2 'decoration' channels). When I was talking about mind blowing experience, emphasis was on the sound. If you guys have any other suggestion feel free to share them.

cheers,

Sorry it took a while to get back to this. I would play with MakeMKV and see what you can do with the files it generates --- the unencoded PCM for all the channels should be in the MKV file. I imagine the tough part will be syncing up the sound with the picture, especially with stuff like chapter breaks.
