How does one avoid getting sucked into trends and corporate advertising? Like, "If you buy this type of clothing you will be an 'X' type of guy"- where X is cool, tough brave, etc.

I've spent a lot of money chasing an image and would like to know if anyone has had the same experience.

That comes with branding. Your clothing plays a significant role with first impressions. This is the best way I can put it. There are people walking around right now with gold teeth and they think it is awesome. They know that most people think it is ridiculous but they don't care. Dress how you want because no matter what people are going to judge you. Just make sure you are confident.

Browse blogs, forums, websites, research and get a feel for stuff that actually speaks to you and expresses what you want to portray and then move toward that aesthetic.

It takes time and I think that everyone seems to fall into the same trap you mention in the beginning.
