Dressing Down A Grey Blazer

OK, so I have this grey hopsack blazer that every time I wear, the comments are "too dressy up top, incongruent with the bottom" or "looks like an orphaned suit jacket". For whatever reason, it photographs very worsted. I think IRL, it does appear more casual, but I don't have an experienced eye IRL to help either confirm or rebuke my opinion. So, here's a close-up of the fabric and a shot from the last time it was worn. I wonder if by looking at a closer shot of the fabric you guys can weigh in on whether my suspicions are right or not. Also, what about changing the buttons to gold ones to help make it stand out as more casual if it still does appear dressy. I thought the light brown horn accomplished that, but...

Any help would be appreciated. FYI- probably going to wear this with Blackwatch trousers on Monday.

I know some folks hate the thought of navy odd trousers, but this could be a situation for them. Brown flannel or a patterned brown - brown houndstooth. Howard Yount has a couple of good ones.

Or just jeans.

In re-reading your post, I dont' even know what you are asking, actually. You want comments on the jacket or what pants to wear with them?

To dress it down...

1) No accessories
2) No tie
3) No polished shoes (suede would be ideal)
4) Perhaps not even a collared shirt - say a v neck sweater with a white crewneck T?
5) match with jeans or corduroy.

Give it a shot. Grey jacket looks fine otherwise.

How thick is it? If it's thin, it might go well with natural colored linen or linen blend pants. Light blue or white jeans might work too.

I'd wear it w/ a checkered shirt and a knit tie. Maybe w/ a chambray shirt and no tie.

If you want to use it casually, maybe denim might work?

A solid mid-grey jacket is always going to appear moderately formal though. I suggest treating as about the same place on the formality scale as a navy blazer, and seeing what combinations result from that approach. NOBD uses mid-grey jackets quite a lot (albeit with more of a pattern/texture) and often manages to avoid the orphan jacket look. Might be worth talking a look through his pics?

That pair of green trousers he got recently would work well with your jacket too, for instance.

That cloth would make a great suit.

If that is an Ercole jacket, it's the best one I have seen so far.

I've only seen jeans paired with any solid gray jackets.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes its an Ercoles.

Its just that everytime I wear it, the comments are, "Jacket is too formal for jeans." when I wear it with jeans, and I can't seem to get the trousers down either. I have a pair of Navy, Brown Houndstooth, and Blackwatch but i guess I just though it would be more versatile than it is. I may see if he's got the fabric still and have him make me up pants to wear as a suit. Or a blazersuit, Sanitation Approved.

I'd say khakis or tan/brown cords would be the best bet. It is a very nice jacket.

Rob - get matching pants made and just wear it as a suit.

Done.
