when you say only vertical stripes, does that include the collar (that would be quite rare and look kind of funny)?
Since you are wearing it under a sweater, you would only really see the horizontal stripes on the collar so it might work out ok.

It would probably be OK, especially if the shirt stripes are pinstripes. The sweater stripes would be a lot bigger. There are probably some combinations that won't work, but I would think most combinations would be OK.
