Hi, the advice on her is usually quite good and I was hoping for some help again.

I will be at a Military Reception that is Black Tie optional, but a Tux is not an option for me. Therefore I'll be in a black 3-piece suit. The question is weather I should go with a black dress shirt with a black and blue tie, or if I should choose an electric royal blue shirt with a solid color tie? The color to be determined.

As most people will be in uniform I don't know if I should stand out with the blue shirt. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

I would go with a white shirt and black tie if your not going to be wearing a tuxedo. Ditch the vest. If your not wearing a tuxedo or uniform you don't want to stand out too much.

Neither of the shirt colors you offer will really work well. Black shirts just don't work with any type of suit. The royal blue shirt could potentially work well with a navy blue, charcoal, or khaki suit, but with a black suit, it's hard to go with anything other than a plain white shirt.

Wear a white shirt and a black tie. Choose a tie with white pindots or some other visually interesting detail (like texture, black repp stripes, or thin white stripes) to keep you from looking like a G-man. If you're comfortable with it, wear a white linen pocketsquare, TV fold (flat fold no peaks).

I would not wear a black tie. It would either look too funereal or as if you are trying to fake a black suit as some sort of fashion forward dinner jacket. Something like a Macclesfield tie would probably be a better option with a black suit.

The Macclesfield tie is a great idea.

Definitely white shirt, blend in as much as possible if you're not going to follow the suggested dress code. Do nothing to advertise the fact that you wanted to dress to the lowest common denominator.

Black, blue, pink, grey would all work: Indeed many colours/patterns of shirt would work

i like lavender shirts with black suits, though since everyone else will be wearing a tuxedo, you should go with white.

With a black suit, I'd recommend a white shirt and silver/grey tie (not too light - more grey than silver). A razor slice of plain white PS might be a nice addition.
