Double Selvage?

There was a Jack & Jones store opening today and the first 30 visitors would get free jeans. Since I had to go somewhere near there, I decided to go. They gave me some O.K. looking jeans which I probably won't use untill the summer. Since their smallest size is 29 and the tag said it would still shrink I gave them a hot soak, that was when I discovered this: Is this a new trend or something? What's up with all the selvage.

In selvage jeans, you will see the actual edge of the fabric where the weaving stops and is finished by the loom, as opposed to denim woven on a projectile loom, where the fabric has been cut off at the ends.

So on these jeans the fabric has been cut off at the ends?

And selvage will always look like this? (with different colors)

False alarms aside, could denim be woven to make double selvage?

The short answer is no. The long answer is kind of, assuming you want to make your pants out of what basically would amount to denim scarves.

I imagine it could be if the looms were setup for it. But they'd have to make different widths per size etc so it seems like it would be a real pain ********** and in no way worth it.

i wouldn't put it past human ingenuity to create an extremely narrow shuttle loom for the express purpose of double selvage. it is an obscene notion, though. yech.

You're missing the main part of the problem. There is a reason there are no selvage bootcuts. Selvage must be straight because fabric edges must be straight. Inseams are not straight. You can't do it. Not without engineering a completely new weaving process that allows for precisely variable width looming.

i was thinking of completely straight stove-pipe legs.

but even if we were talking bootcuts, since we are inventing the loom, why not make it variable widths?

Just making a narrower or wider loom isn't really all that difficult if you're basing it off current designs. That is how scarves are made. But even with stovepipe legs, at the upper thigh and crutch area, you need it to get wider to make the stuff that covers your crotch and ass.
