Double Breasted Trench Coat: In Fashion?

I was poking around today at a vintage store and found a black double breasted trench coat with belt. It was $15 so I decided to splurge and bought it. It fits me very well in terms of sleeve length and shoulders.

Are these things still in style? I guess I could possibly exchange it, although I'd prefer just to hang on to it. Can I pair this with jeans as well as slacks? Can I wear a trench coat over a sweater or blazer? Tips!

Double breasted trench coats never go out of style, they're a classic. Besides, $15 for a trench coat (especially if it fits you well) is a great price. Although trench coats are usually meant to go over a blazer/suit, in my opinion it's perfectly acceptable to wear them with jeans and/or a sweater. I have a fully lined Oleg Cassini trench I wear a lot, with almost everything, especially when it gets cold.

They're both stylish and, if cut right, in fashion. The problem I have with DB coats is that you can't wear them open, which limits the temperatures they're comfortable in. Where I live, there just aren't enough days in the calendar.

Plus with trench coats there's that whole belt problem.

"in fashion" - don't know for sure, but I've seen a fair few in stores recently. Even M&S has them now!

"in style" - if they suit your frame, then always!

yes, they are very "in fashion". I see them everywhere on the streets, especially with a very high buttoning stance, large lapels and slim (read constricting) fit.

Mine is (I think) stylish, but too full of a cut to be fashionable:

I don't care about fashion, I think they have style

I have many trench coats

1 tan classic Burberry's
2 slim fit AP one in khaki one in blue
1 H&M in black

and I am thinking on buying one in 100% camel hair by Polo BL

Thanks for the replies, this is reassuring. The thing is, one of the reasons it was such a good deal is that the inside liner was removed from the coat. There's a continuous zipper running up one side, across the shoulders, then back down the opposite side inside the coat, so some liner is clearly missing. Also, it's clearly been washed a few times so it's no longer jet jet black, and could be mistaken for a dark navy.

But it looked really cool, was well fitted, and considering I passed on a raincoat for $180 last year and have been looking for a light rain coat ever since, I couldn't pass on this one.

Cheers,

I've tried dressing up a few outfits with the trench. It actually pairs quite nicely with a black mock turtleneck and jeans. I think it would look better with slacks as the texture is more similar, but it's still certainly acceptable with jeans and boots. Man, there are lots of possibilities with the trench! Woo hoo!

PS: I like the trench in camel/tan, I think I'd like to find one in that color too!

All the ones I've seen either look sloppy or overly dramatic, but I doubt I've seen any that are cut right. Does this open-option apply to other DB coats? Peacoats, even?

I'd say the shorter cut ones are in fashion, i've seen a few in magazines and would like one. They seem to be better worn casual
