I wonder if a tourniquet could have saved him, possibly at the cost of the leg.

What shocks me is how paper-think that tailgate is. Something thicker might have saved his life. I've gone hunting with my dad before and we don't use dogs but I know many others who do. This is very sad news, nothing funny about it.

This was the first thing that came to my mind as well... Another thing could have definately saved his life, however: being more careful with his guns. Guns are very dangerous tools and should be treated as such.
Not really funny. I've had to deal with hunting accidents before as a wilderness search and rescue person. Much less serious, thankfully, but it does imbue you with a certain respect for firearms.
