Does watch buckle metal need to match the metal of the watch itself?

I have a watch that's silver, but the buckle that came with the strap I ordered is gold colored. I know the buckle can be changed, but wondering if it even matters...

I bought a vintage Omega last year that had come with a non original strap and buckle. The case is rose gold, but the yellow gold buckle ( read: yellow colored metal) bugged me. I changed it back to a genuine rose gold buckle even though it cost nearly 1/3 the price of the watch. But I don't regret it, as the original buckle has the nice Omega symbol at the clasp.

I think even a combination of silver watch, gold buckle, or vice versa would bother the hell out of me. But it's strickly a personal choice I suppose. You'll spend a great deal more time staring at it than anyone else, so you're the only one you have to please.

Same here, I couldn't wear a combo like that. I just couldn't, no way.

+1! Things like that need to match. The issue of shoes and belts matching exactly -- exact color and or type of leather -- are another neurotic matter
. For me, at least.

European Watch Company in Boston. They also have shell cordovan straps that are simply awesome. Last time I ordered one they gave me a matching buckle for free. I sent them pics of the watch to match (sort of a matte steel finish). I have bought from them twice and both times I was very happy.
