Does this suit fit me?

Hello Gentlemen and hopefully tailors,

I purchased this from a SF member. Unfortunately, it feels big. I normally wear EU 46C and this is EU 48R drop 8. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry to say, but yes, it's far too big. Don't despair though, I've purchased my fair share of items online that haven't fit correctly.

I'd suggest rather than alterations (as quite a few seem to be needed), simply resell the garment and, with knowledge of a few key measurements of yours (shoulders, sleeve length, chest, waist and inseam) keep up the search. You've done well in already looking for garments to buy on this site, as many sellers can readily give you the measurements of the items they are selling, allowing you to find a more perfect match.

Patience is needed, but I'm sure that after a while, you'll come across many items that will be a closer fit. I know it's tempting to buy a great looking suit/jacket at an appealing price, but only do this if it satisfies your dimensions. Be ruthless, if it doesn't match your measurements, close the tab on it and move on. Best of luck!

Thank you kind sir. I thought the shoulder measurement and length were close enough. I read somewhere on this forum that if it's a good suit maker you could literally buy up or down a size. I was going by that. Is that not true anymore? Is 0.25" wider in the shoulders that much wider?

Size number on a suit is really meaningless; it only tells you what the designer thinks a person with a size X chest looks like. This is why so many of us require actual measurements from the garments themselves.

Don't rely on those numbers for fit. Instead, measure something that fits well, then buy things close to those measurements. Yes, in the beginning it's kind of like a "need credit to get credit" scenario because you don't necessarily have a well-fitting garment to provide the base numbers. However, give yourself a bit of time and patience, maybe even take a measuring tape to a store (I've done it) and learn what works and what doesn't.

Rather than flounder about using words to determine what may or may not fit you, go to some bricks and mortar shops and try some suits from different manufacturers. Then you might just realise that the cut of the garment is even more relevant to fit than any numbers on a tag.
