Unless I'm mistaken, originally most 'odd jackets' were suit jackets worn with a different pair of trousers.

While this is without question a suit jacket, if it had peak lapel, with swapped buttons would it be usable as a (pretty dull fabric wise) odd-jacket? Would the answer be different if it were navy?

Very good question. I would presume that the answer would be the same based upon the replies above. However, I can't speak for everyone here. For me, I think that I would still have that "niggle" in my brain. I couldn't really explain why. But it was this niggle that led me to create this thread.

Cheers

I think for me, the combination of relative flat fabric + peak lapel + matching button = suit. Changing 1 of the three (buttons) wouldn't do it.

I don't think I could personally tell a blue suit jacket with replaced buttons (to horn or brass or silver) from a blazer. I suspect if this jacket were notch lapel and had leather buttons on it, it might slip by me as a sportsjacket. Its just that the fabric + peak is too much for buttons to overcome.

+1

but if you like the jacket, it might be possible to find suit pants to go with it?

Usually, if you have to ask the question then, yes, it looks like a suit jacket.

Some other posts did a good job pointing out why.
