Is the shirt and tie the same colour?

not exactly, but they are similar. I was hoping the stripes in the shirt and the tie would create enough contrast

On its own, the combo doesn't look good. But it might look better if worn with a solid navy suit.

I say when dealing with similar colours, it is better for the tie to be a few shades darker. As the purple is the dominant colour for the tie, the stripes isn't really going to help that much.

no but the first one here is the best of the lot. Do yourself a favor and just get a solid navy tie to go with that shirt.

I'd rather go with a burgundy. But now that you mention it, OP probably doesn't have a navy tie yet. If don't have a navy tie, go buy a navy. They are great for lazy days anyway.
