not exactly, but they are similar. I was hoping the stripes in the shirt and the tie would create enough contrast

On its own, the combo doesn't look good. But it might look better if worn with a solid navy suit.

I say when dealing with similar colours, it is better for the tie to be a few shades darker. As the purple is the dominant colour for the tie, the stripes isn't really going to help that much.

Oh ****... that tie was camouflaging like crazy. I thought it a weird patterned shirt.

Felt like I was look at:


Would look better with a solid tie.

I'd rather go with a burgundy. But now that you mention it, OP probably doesn't have a navy tie yet. If don't have a navy tie, go buy a navy. They are great for lazy days anyway.
