So several related questions have been in my mind for a while, but I'm finally asking because I'm about to buy a tie. A very simple one, just a burgundy repp stripe tie with a cream/beige bar stripe (Brooks Brothers #3). The question is: does a cream-striped tie work against a white shirt? How about a shirt with a white ground and a blue graph check?
To me, it seems best with either a blue shirt or a cream shirt.
You can also approach it the reverse way. Does a cream shirt work with a white-striped tie (for instance, navy ground with white stripes)?

Here's an example. I think this Berg & Berg tie works against the white shirt because the cream/beige stripe is different enough than white to make it look good. In fact, I'm not sure it would work as well with a blue shirt. If it were more of an ff-white (i.e. less yellow/brown), I'm not sure. What say ye?
