I wondered if anyone could help me with something in the world of English shoe manufacturing which is an absolute mystery to me. I have just bought a very well-made pair of brown oxford shoes on ebay which are an unworn vintage pair with the brand name "Alan Martin". The shoes have a 1930s/40s look to them in their last shape, but probably date from the 1960s or 70s. The information stamped inside says they are made in England. However, I cannot find any trace of a company or brand called Alan Martin, either existing or defunct. The shoes certainly look like they are made in Northamptonshire, and perhaps were made by one of the regular shoemakers for someone else. Has anyone ever come across this name before and can shed some light on this?
