Does anybody actually hate all red ties?

If I had a penny for every time I read a comment like "Nice fit, but SF doesn't like red ties" or something like that, I could go out and buy a red tie.

Here's the thing: I've heard only a handful of people say they don't like red ties. I don't like fire-engine red / crimson ties -- they're too bold. But I don't like really bright cobalt blue ties much for the same reason. As far as I recall, even Manton doesn't mind a nice burgundy.

Does anybody actually hate all red ties?

I used to think the same thing, but the four red-ish ties I have are actually some of my favorites now. Key is to go with a matte twill or Macclesfield or a knit/grenadine.

Shiny ties in bold colors are tacky, period. Red is especially egregious.

The red ties I like are mostly burg knits. I have a dark red madder which is nice.

I do too. I suppose I meant "vibrant" when I wrote "bold."

I think a pattern also helps for brighter reds. (Non burgundy)

Stripes, neats, etc. Distracts from the burning-ness of the bright red

I like burgundy solids. I am okay with ties with a predominantly red background provided the background is sufficiently dark and there is some sort of pattern. I'm okay with my dark red burgundy Hober because it is not shiny and has some visual interest. Overly bright red ties are exceptionally tacky and IMO far more egregious than comparable ties in the blue and grey family. Some shiny / satin grey, black and blue ties can work very well at an evening social event.

I just happen to wear a red tie today, which I like a lot. I agree with the comments raised above though, patterns certainly help to reduce the "brightness". Also, this one is wool, making it everything by shiny...

Although I don't mind red ties, I much prefer burgundy. Both of the (deep) red ties that I own have textural interest: one has textured pindots and the other has large, approximately 1/16" twill weave, or I think of it as a narrow self-stripe. In general, I dislike ties with a plain satin finish, perhaps because they seem to be a favorite of The Donald.

Burgundy is great.

Bright, primary-color red is bad. But just about any bright, primary-ish color is bad.

Never thought about it actually. I have a big, bold, solid red tie that I hate but that's because it's too long for my body type. The fact that it's bold in color doesn't bother me as much. However, I do dislike bold, solid yellow ties for much of the same reasons pointed out above. I'm in the market for new ties and have been considering texture and shade of the primary colors I want to add to my rotation. I like many of the ideas suggested above (particularly JRD617)
